The town, located at a good natural harbor, was founded by the French in 1650, changed hands several times and came under British control in 1814. The city’s architecture is not much influenced by the variegated colonial past, as several fires have destroyed it, most recently in 1948. Lucia’s large tourist stream arrives, not least a few hundred thousand annual cruise tourists. In the hills to the east lies the facility Morne Fortune with a magnificent view of the city and to the neighboring island of Martinique.
