The 800-kilometer-long archipelago of the Maldives at the tip of the Indian subcontinent consists of 2,000 coral islands and atolls. The population of this island nation is less than 300,000; the dominant religion is Islam and the main spoken language is Divehi.

The capital of the Maldives is Male. Agriculture – coconut palm, banana, mango and sweet potato – can only be practiced on a few islands and most of the food has to be imported from outside the islands. Instead, there is enough fish in the surrounding waters. However, tourism is the most important source of income for a small state.

The underwater world of the Maldives is also worth a visit, considered one of the most beautiful snorkelling destinations in the world.
