Guyana Military

Guyana is a country located in South America. With a population of around 750,000 people, it is the fourth-smallest country in the region. Guyana is a presidential republic and its military consists of three branches: the Army, Air Force and Coast Guard. The Armed Forces are responsible for defending the country’s borders and sovereignty, as well as providing security to its citizens. In terms of defense spending, Guyana spends approximately $30 million annually on its military, making it one of the highest defense spending nations in South America. The country also participates in several United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions such as those in Haiti and Colombia. Defense

The defense of Guyana encompasses (2009) 1,100 men recruited and is organized in a battalion, five patrol boats and some small aircraft. Semi-military security forces amount to 1,500 men. The material is of varying origin. Defense costs decreased in 1985-96 from 6.6% to 1.0% of GDP and were estimated to remain at this level in 2007.
