Cabo Verde Military

Cape Verde is an island nation located off the coast of West Africa. With a population of over 550,000 people, it is the 141st most populous country in Africa. Cape Verde is a semi-presidential republic and its military consists of three branches: the Cape Verdean Armed Forces, National Guard, and Gendarmerie. The Cape Verdean armed forces are responsible for defending the country’s borders and sovereignty, as well as providing security to its citizens. In terms of defense spending, Cape Verde spends approximately $35 million annually on its military, making it one of the lowest defense spending nations per capita in Africa. The country also participates in several regional peacekeeping missions such as those in Guinea-Bissau and Liberia. Defense

The defense, which is based on selective military duty, includes (2009) 1,200 men and is organized into two battalions, a coast guard with a few small boats and an air force part with some transport aircraft. The material is outdated and of Soviet origin. Defense costs rose from 0.9% to 1.7% of GDP in 1985-96, having decreased to 0.6% of GDP in 2007.
