The defense, which is based on selective military duty,
includes (2009) 1,200 men and is organized into two
battalions, a coast guard with a few small boats and an air
force part with some transport aircraft. The material is
outdated and of Soviet origin. Defense costs rose from 0.9%
to 1.7% of GDP in 1985-96, having decreased to 0.6% of GDP
