Barbados Military

Barbados is a small tropical island nation in the Caribbean Sea with a limited military and defense capability. The Barbados Defence Force (BDF) consists of approximately 1,200 personnel and is responsible for protecting the country’s territorial waters and airspace. The BDF is equipped with modern military hardware including tanks, aircraft, and warships. Barbados also maintains close ties with its neighbors through bilateral agreements such as the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). In addition to this, the country has participated in several regional security initiatives such as the United Nations International Waters Treaty which is aimed at protecting territorial waters in the Caribbean region. Defense

The defense is voluntary and amounts to 600 men with a reserve of 400 men. The Coast Guard has six patrol boats. Defense costs decreased in 1985-2007 from 0.9% to 0.8% of GDP.
